President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih departed on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) late Sunday.

The state trip is a response to the invitation extended by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of Armed Forces of the UAE, Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid is also accompanying President Solih on the visit, during which they will attend the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and Zayed Sustainability Awards Ceremony on January 14.

The Foreign Minister announced the visit and highlighted the importance the current government placed on environmental sustainability.

A statement tweeted by Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid prior to his departure to UAE.

ADSW is the largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East which is held annually each January. The Zayed Sustainability Prize is awarded to individuals who create innovative solutions or technologies which address sustainability solutions.

A recent agreement between Maldives and the UAE enables locals to travel to the latter without acquiring a visa. Effective from January 1, all locals who hold a valid diplomatic, official or ordinary passport will be granted a one-month visa upon entry into the UAE.
