Vice President Faisal Naseem moved to his official residence, 'Hilaaleege', with his wife and two children on Monday.
Hilaaleege was the presidential palace of Ibrahim Nasir, the first President of the Second Republic. It was seized by the state in 1981, under the presidency of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, after Nasir was sentenced to jail on corruption charges.
The residence was then used to accommodate foreign dignitaries that visited the Maldives during Maumoon’s regime.
Under Nasheed’s regime, however, Hilaaleege was established as the official residence of his Vice President, Mohamed Waheed. The first Vice President of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, Mohamed Jameel, was also accommodated in Hilaaleege until his impeachment.
During the last three years of his regime, Yameen shifted residence to Hilaaleege, while the presidential palace of 'Muliaage' was used to hold political activities ofthen First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.
The incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih currently resides in Muliaage.
