Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) on Monday announced plans to establish fire stations and firefighting services in all islands of Maldives within five years.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Coast Guard Building, MNDF Fire and Rescue's commander, Colonel Abdulla Zuhuree, stated that the five-year action plan has been compiled, and that MNDF were working with the Ministry of Defence to expand firefighting services to the atolls.

"We shall establish a fire station and firefighting equipment in every atoll, under our five-year plan".

Colonel Zuhuree went on to share that preparations were underway to distribute the 13 fire engines, which were gifted to MNDF Fire and Rescue by the Japanese government early December. According to Zuhuree, two fire engines will be deployed in Addu City, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, and Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll each.

The colonel further disclosed that fire incidents in Maldives have decreased over the past few years, attributing the results to the awareness programmes conducted by Fire and Rescue.
