Maldives brought the new regulation on international cooperation in criminal matters into effect last week.
The regulation was compiled by the Prosecutor General under the international cooperation in criminal matters law, which states that Maldives can seek international help for criminal cases and vice versa only through the Prosecutor General.
The new regulation specifies the policies and procedures to be followed in seeking the help of foreign entities for criminal matters. International bodies must also follow the regulation in seeking the help of Maldivian authorities.
The policies stated in the regulation include clauses on finding evidence, repatriation, inmates in transit at Maldives, and implementation of international orders to freeze assets.
