Elections Commission on Wednesday authorised to hold general meetings to form two of the newly proposed political parties.
According to local media Mihaaru, the electoral watchdog's member Ahmed Akram revealed that permission was granted to 'Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party' and 'Maldives Third Way Democrats'.
The parties' charter and manifesto, along with other tasks specified in the Political Parties Act, have to be completed during the formative general meeting, which has to be attended by minimum 300 people.
"The commission will monitor the meetings, and officially register the parties if the meetings proceed legitimately", said Akram.
Efforts to found Maldives Labour and Social Democratic Party are led by the lawyer Abdulla Haseen, while Maldives Third Way Democrats is founded by Ismail Asif, the vice president of Maldives National Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Meanwhile, the EC has rejected the requests to form 'The Great Green Connection' and 'Maldivians Action Party', deeming their names unsuitable for political parties.
