Maldives establishes commission to audit prisons

A seven-member commission was established on Monday to conduct an audit report of all the prisons in Maldives.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs states the purpose of requesting an audit report as means of forwarding prison reform. In addition, the ministry stated that the rights of inmates will be ensured based on the report.

The current prisons in Maldives include those in capital Male’, Maafushi and Himmafushi located in Kaafu Atoll. Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service also supervise ‘Atholhu Vehi’ and Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre.

A detention centre specially designed to hold foreign detainees is located in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale’.

The members on the prison audit commission are:

1. Dr. Abdulla Hisneen Hilmy, Hithadhoo in Addu Atoll

2. Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Kareem, Hulhumale’

3. Shahindha Ismail, Male’

4. Zulaikha Dawood, Male’

5. Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu, Kandholhudhoo in Raa Atoll

6. Shadhiya Adam, Dhangethi in Alif Dhaalu Atoll

7. Aminath Naheena Ahmed, Fuvahmulah

Conducting audits on prisons was one of the electoral pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
