Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail, on Wednesday, announced that the ministry was charged with maintaining records and documenting information related to the islands of Maldives.
The Fisheries Ministry was previously handling this task.
Despite the change in authority, leasing islands for resort development and overlooking the bidding process for such projects will still come under the jurisdiction of the Tourism Ministry. In addition to this, the Fisheries Ministry will also continue to manage leasing islands for agricultural purposes.
The Economic Minister revealed that there were plans by the councils of currently inhabited Islands to lease islands for varied purposes.
