Parliament backs Ambassador nominations

The Parliament passed its approval for the eight ambassador nominations made by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The envoys were approved by a unanimous vote by the parliament, with some of the nominees receiving 60 votes in their favour.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented the names of ambassadors to the Parliament for approval on December 6.

However, three nominations; Ambassador to Thailand Mohamed Jinah, Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Mohamed Haleel, Ambassador to China Aishath Azima, were sent to the National Security Committee for further assessment.

Confirmed Ambassadors;

1. Thilmeeza Hussain - Ambassador to the United States of America and the United Nations 2. Hassan Sobir - Ambassador to Brussels 3. Aishath Mohamed Didi - Ambassador to India 4. Umar Abdul Razzaq - Ambassador to Sri Lanka 5. Dr. Abdulla Mausoom - Ambassador to Singapore 6. Ahmed Latheef - Ambassador to Germany 7. Dr. Farahanaaz Faisal - Ambassador to the United Kingdom 8. Wisam Ali - Ambassador to Malaysia

Many of the appointees have previously held diplomatic posts and served as high-level government officials.

Among them, Sobir and Dr. Mausoom, served as cabinet ministers during the presidency of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Dr. Mausoom is also the current Vice-President of Jumhooree Party (JP).

Ahmed Latheef, the Director General of Transition and elder brother to Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)'s chairperson Hassan Latheef, is a career diplomat, and most recently served as the ambassador to China during former President Mohamed Nasheed term in office.

Wisam is the spouse of former Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP)'s Leader Thasmeen Ali.
