Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced on Tuesday that more than 33,000 people have signed up for them within the last two months.

The Deputy Secretary General of the ruling MDP, Afshan Latheef, stated that more than 33,000 applications have been lodged to join the party since the beginning of October.

According to the Election Commission’s (EC) website, in July it was recorded that 29,008 members were registered with MDP. They are also the party with the leading membership count. As a result of the new law that states fingerprint data are required for the application of party membership, a large number of registered members were excluded from the EC’s list.

Afshan, however, stated that there are 50,000 members on the MDP registry. After processing the forms that were recently forwarded to MDP, the party membership would now rise to more than 80,000 people.

According to July statistics, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), had 48,129 members. The third highest party membership belonged to Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), a former coalition partner with the previous ruling party PPM, with 10,648 members. Jumhooree Party has 10,090 members and Adhalath Party has 6,795 members.

In the last two months, numerous people have signed up for MDP with regard to the upcoming primaries for March's parliamentary elections. The boost in party membership for MDP took effect because the deadline for registration to vote in the primary elections was Friday, 7 December.
