President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday appointed Abdulla Shamaal as Chief of Defence Force after the dismissal of Ahmed Shiyam. In addition, Brigadier General Abdul Raheem was appointed as the Vice Chief.

According to the President’s Office, Brigadier General Ahmed Shahid was also dismissed as the Vice Chief.

The High Court of the Maldives ordered to reinstate Shamaal as the Chief of Defence Force after he was removed from his post unlawfully.

Shamaal’s controversial dismissal came in 2013 after being accused of causing controversy among his fellow soldiers after expressing his views on social media. Shamaal appealed to the Civil Court in September 2016. However, the court had made the decision that he was removed from his position accordingly.

Shamaal appealed to the High Court consequently as the judgment regarding the removal of his position was declared unlawful. The court on Tuesday proclaimed that Shamaal must be reinstated to a job of his previous standard within 15 days. Furthermore, the court ordered to give his salary for the period of his absence, within the next 30 days.
