The President of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Hassan Luthfee, stated that the fight against corruption has been failing because of legal loopholes.

Luthfee released a statement on Sunday, marked as the International Anti-Corruption Day, proposing to bring reforms to the anti-corruption laws although he has not received any support from relevant authorities.

“Legal loopholes are affecting the fight against corruption. It is very important to reconstruct the laws surrounding corruption," said Luthfee in his statement.

Luthfee has claimed that it is a crime to get rich by unlawful means in more than 40 countries in the world. Therefore he has called Maldives to follow such examples.

Luthfee also noted that ACC has been putting all its effort to eliminate corruption, according to the existing laws and with the limited power assigned to them. In addition, he said that ACC has played a crucial role in providing information to the public.

According to ACC, 539 cases were put forward to the commission till September. ACC initiated in securing 203 of those cases. Further, Luthfee stated that ACC had sent six cases to the Prosecutor General’s Office till September, including to press charges against 10 people.

Luthfee said that he was concerned about the rate of economic development, and the standard of living and social developments that will fail due to existence of corruption in the country.
