Thoyyib Mohamed was appointed as the Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) on Tuesday.

He is the first individual appointed thus far by recently elected President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, as a leader of a high-level state enterprise.

Having previously served as a chairman in MMPRC, Thoyyib was also the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture during the term of former President Mohamed Nasheed.

Prior to his appointment, Thoyyib was also the chair of the transition team created to assess the state of Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Corporation (MITP), Public Service Media (PSM), Maldives Tourism Development Corporation and MMPRC.

According to Thoyyib, MMPRC and PSM were among the state institutions which did not present their financial records to the transition teams.

In 2015, MMPRC was revealed as the centre point for the largest corruption case ever recorded in Maldives. While the former Vice-President and Tourism Minister Ahmed Adheeb was charged for the embezzlement of MVR 1.2 billion, Abdulla Ziyath, the former Managing Director of the company was also jailed in relation to the case.

After Ziyath was sentenced to prison, Haris Mohamed served as acting Managing Director of MMPRC.
