The government on Monday decided to establish a 'Tech Council' in order to improve the technology sector in Maldives.

During the first press conference held by the Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamaal, he alleged that previous governments had failed to improve the technology sector of the Maldives.

He stated that, for this reason, the new government will focus on training individuals within the sector and work to push the neglected area to new heights.

Minister Maleeh revealed that the ‘Tech Council’ will consist of 10 civillians from different backgrounds such as the business field, the government and the technology sector.

According to the minister, the council will initially be established under a regulation. However, the minister noted that the council will later be administered under an individual act.

In addition to this, the minister revealed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also vowed to establish technology institutions in Maldives and further added that the administration will soon start working to achieve these goals.

The Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology is a brand new ministry created by President Solih after taking the oath of office on November 17. The Ministry is currently located in the same building as the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT).
