The Supreme Court on Thursday overturned Sheikh Imran Abdulla's 12-year jail sentence and declared him a free man.

The sentence was overturned with three judges ruling in favour of the current Minister of Home Affairs.

Minister Imran was convicted for terrorism over allegedly inciting violence during his speech in the infamous May-Day parade held in 2015.

The Adhaalath Party leader was serving his time under house arrest until the Supreme Court ordered his release on November 1. The temporary suspension on his sentence was until a judgement was reached on his conviction.

The Supreme Court's verdict came amid Imran facing criticism for his appointment as the Home Minister while he had a 12-year jail sentence. However, with this verdict, there are no obstacles to him taking up the post in the cabinet.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had previously declared that Imran was convicted wrongfully and called for his immediate release.

Furthermore, the Working Group stated that Imran should be compensated for the time he has served.
