The Criminal Court on Wednesday acquitted Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Ahmed Mahloof who was charged with making a false report to a law enforcement agency.

The state had indicted Mahloof over a tweet he posted last January 20, in which he accused that inmates that had passed away in Maafushi Prison had been murdered.

His tweet in local Dhivehi language read, "[The inmates] were killed by depriving them of medical care. 10 inmate deaths within a year is a serious problem", calling on the police commissioner and DOP to take responsibility.

Had he been found guilty, Mahloof would have faced four months and 24 days in jail.

However, the trial did not reach the verdict stage and the Criminal Court stated on Wednesday that the charge against Mahloof could not be proven.

The former lawmaker had previously been sentenced to 10 months and 24 days in jail over obstruction of law enforcement officers.
