President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Sunday, established the Presidential Committee on Corruption and Asset recovery.
The purpose of the committee is to investigate cases of the misuse of government funds, between January 1, 2012 to the date of President Solih’s inauguration.
The commission, which is set to function until its work concludes, will receive all rights received by investigative bodies. The Presidential Committee on Corruption and Asset recovery was created under Article 115 of the Constitution, which deals with the powers and responsibilities of the president.
While the president of the commission is Ahmed Asadh, other members include:
- Aas Abdulla
- Nadheem Ibrahim
- Aishath Hana Waheedh
- Fathmath Sareera Shareef
The commission was created to fulfil one of President Solih’s presidential pledges which guarantee the recovery of embezzled state funds.
In his inaugural address, President Solih highlighted the necessity of carrying out investigations as the precise scale and amount of financial loss due to theft, corruption, and negligence is still unclear.
President Solih has also created commissions to tackle the detention of political prisoners and solve high profile murders.
