Former President Mohamed Nasheed, on Sunday, criticized Raajje TV for questioning whether the new administration had plans to establish a parliamentary system in Maldives.

During an interview, Raajje TV posed a question to Nasheed asking whether newly sworn-in President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih intended to transition Maldives into a parliamentary system.

Nasheed responded in length by detailing the history of the Maldivian political system. Finding his answer indefinite, the interviewer proceeded to repeat the question.

The former president then accused Raajje TV of desiring to ‘sensationalize’ news by sowing discord and creating hatred, adding that he knew journalists "wish to create doubt among the population".

Nasheed went on to assert that he maintains a close relationship with the newly sworn-in President, displaying two raised fingers to punctuate the statement.

This is the first incident in which Nasheed criticized Raajje TV since his resignation in 2012. The former president is generally known to have commended the station for their local news coverage.

Newly-sworn in President Solih has pledged to remove the barriers to press freedom imposed during the regime of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
