Solih sworn in as seventh President of Maldives

The oath taking ceremony of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Vice President-Elect Faisal Naseem is scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Solih had won the 2018 presidential election with a sizeable lead, contesting against former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Solih’s oath taking ceremony is set to begin at 05:00 p.m, at the national stadium, infront of an audience of 13,000 people.

Invitees attending the Presidential Oathtaking for President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Vice President-Elect have begun filling in seats at the Galolhu Stadium, excitement running high as the elected officials prepare to begin a five-year term in the highest office.

While a total of 46 foreign leaders and dignitaries grace the momentous occasion, the most notable presence is that of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In addition, former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa, son of country's former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, have also flown in to witness the event.

Attendees of the ceremony also include foreign ambassadors and senior government officials of Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Morocco, the United States, China, Seychelles, Mauritius, and the United Arab Emirates.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Maldives to grace the presidential inauguration of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. India and Maldives have suffered strains in bilateral ties during the regime of the outgoing president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. This is his maiden voyage to Maldives, since assuming office in 2014. Modi hopes to strengthen ties between Maldives and neighbouring India during the administration of the opposition coalition.

Presidential inauguration is dictated to take place during a parliamentary sitting. Therefore, Solih's inauguration will take place in a parliament themed setting at the national stadium as an official sitting of the parliament.
