President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Tuesday ratified the bill to nullify the Anti-Defection Act.

The bill to nullify the Act was lobbied to the parliament by member of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed.

The bill was passed last month with votes from lawmakers of both the ruling party and opposition coalition.

The contentious Act had stated that any lawmaker that resigned or was expelled from the political party they were registered to at the time of election, would automatically lose their seat in parliament.

After the Act was first ratified, the opposition coalition had declared that it was an unconstitutional legislation and filed at the Supreme Court seeking to annul it. However, the apex court had ruled that the Act was legitimate.
