Velana International Airport (VIA) has been awarded the title of ‘Indian ocean’s leading airport’ in the ‘World Travel Awards’ of 2018.
VIA was awarded the prestigious title at a Gala held in Durban, Africa for the seventh time in a row.
VIA has been functioning with only one runway so far although an additional runway has been built, but is yet to be open to use.
The new runway measures 45 meter in width and 3,200 in length.
The USD 800 million project to modernize the airport included the development of runway, seaplane terminal, terminal for passengers.
Maldives also took home titles such as Indian Ocean’s Leading Beach Destination, Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination and Indian Ocean’s Leading Dive Destination.
Several resorts in Maldives also received awards at the World Travel Awards 2018. Sun Siyam Iru Fushi Maldives, was awarded Indian Ocean’s Leading Family Resort, JA Manafaru as Indian Ocean’s Leading Honeymoon Resort and the Royal Island Suite at JA Manafaru as the Indian Ocean’s Leading Hotel Suite.
