Parliamentary speaker Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, on Thursday, resigned from his post.

Speaking to local news media 'Mihaaru', ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) parliamentary group leader and Villimale MP Ahmed Nihan revealed that Maseeh had sent in his letter of resignation to the parliamentary administration and added that Maseeh had also announced his resignation to the PPM parliamentary group.

Whilst Maseeh has resigned from his post, the no-confidence motion against the parliamentary speaker had been set in agenda for the parliamentary sitting scheduled for Thursday night.

Opposition had earlier filed two motions to oust speaker Maseeh. However, the motions were not set to agenda over complications.

MP Nihan had taken to Twitter to express gratitude to the outgoing speaker and noted Maseeh as a team player.
