The parliament on Wednesday approved an MVR 52 million budget for the Audit Office.
The annual budget was passed with 47 members present voting in favour, without amending the bill approved by the Public Finance Committee.
Although the Audit Office had initially proposed a budget of MVR 60 million to the Public Finance Committee, the parliament approved only MVR 52 million.
Members of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives accused the opposition members of opposing the proposed MVR 60 million during the parliament discussions on the budget.
The Committee had decided that although MVR 60 million would not be approved, a special budget or a contingency budget will be made for the Audit Office under the guidance of Ministry of Finance and Treasury, should there be a need for more funds.
The parliament had passed MVR 50 million as the 2018 budget for the Auditor General's Office.
