The case to handover ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) leadership to the lawfully elected former president of the party, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been filed at the Supreme Court on Monday.

The case was previously filed by a general member of the party to the Civil Court. The court had commenced the trial on October 15th but on account of the case being submitted to the Supreme Court, the case has been withdrawn from the Civil Court.

The case filed against PPM by Ahmed Rasheed of Thinadhoo, Gaaf Dhaalu Atoll, the case stated the current leadership of PPM as illegitimate and requested the leadership be handed over to Maumoon after the recent congress held by PPM was rejected by the Elections Commission.

According to local news ‘Mihaaru’, Civil Court had revealed to the lawyers that the files have been presented to the Supreme Court under orders.

Since the commencement of the trial at Civil Court, there have been no hearings, despite a scheduled hearing for Thursday, due to the judge presiding over the case being on leave.

Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom had filed a case to the Civil Court in 2016 dictating the incumbent as the advisor of the party until the party council could officially decide to oust Maumoon. After a council meeting chaired by President Yameen, the party ruled in favor of appointing President Yameen as the new party leader.

According to PPM’s party charter, if a party member holds the position of Presidency of the Maldives, then the person is eligible to be the party leader.
