Authorities at Velana International Airport have seized 1KG bullion of gold in an attempt to export to Sri Lanka.
Police spokesperson stated that matter is being investigated jointly with Maldives Customs Service. No further details have been shared.
According to local news ‘Mihaaru’, an aviation security officer spotted the gold bullion enclosed inside a box of saltwater fish on Sunday, as it was picked up on the security scanner.
A witness reported to the media that the police, customs officials and security staff were notified when the bullion was found. The witness stated that while “no one was arrested", it was "known that the box of fish was intended to be exported to Srilanka”.
