The ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), on Wednesday, condemned the leak of confidential testimonies presented to the Supreme Court in the case filed by the president to nullify the results of the presidential election held on September 23.

In a press release, PPM highlighted the importance of maintaining confidence in the legal system and the need to stop ‘uncivilised’ actions such as leaking confidential documents and evidence.

PPM further stated that divulging such information to fulfil political motives impinges the rights of the people, by endangering witnesses and discouraging them from coming forward.

The secret testimonies, which supposedly prove that members of the Elections Commission (EC) had tampered with the election results, were leaked on social media. It is unknown who leaked the testimonies.

The witnesses, whose identities were not revealed, claim that special rings, erasable pens and ink were used to rig votes. The witnesses also claim that EC's President Ahmed Shareef had ordered the importation of the rings.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled against allowing the testimony of confidential witnesses and concluded the final hearing of the case filed by incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to nullify the election results. The apex court’s verdict is yet to be released.
