President's Office's spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali on Wednesday night refuted the opposition's allegations of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom planning to flee from Maldives.

The opposition coalition filed a case at the police earlier the same night, accusing the president of attempting to flee the country in the midst of several major corruption allegations against him.

Spokesperson Muaz responded that President Yameen would never flee and that he would cooperate with any investigation against him.

"Didn't he cooperate with the accusations he faced even before he came to presidency? Didn't he answer to the parliament in the USD 800 million oil case?", said Muaz, referring to a previous illegal oil trade case made against the incumbent prior to his presidency.

Muaz criticised the rumours as a ploy to defame President Yameen, pointing out that the opposition also alleged that First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim had fled when she flew abroad on October 4. He assured that their rumours would be revealed as false very soon.

According to sources cited by local media Mihaaru, the First Lady is to return early Thursday.
