Incumbent Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, on Wednesday, admitted that his biggest weakness was the failure to understand the Maldivian people during his five-year term.

Addressing the nation for the second time on live television after his defeat in the presidential elections, President Yameen conceded defeat and stated that the biggest failure in his five-year term was his failure to understand how the thinking of Maldivian people changed over time.

In his 15-minute address to the nation, President Yameen said his primary objective was to protect the independence and sovereignty of the country.

“The basis of all the work and policies of my government was ensuring peace and security of the nation. In doing this, I would have done things that various political figures found difficult. The five years I have spent in government were not easy for me.” said President Yameen.

He further pledged to continue to serve serving the people and the nation before urging the country's new leadership to put the interests of the country above their own.

Hinnavaru MP and President-Elect Solih won the electoral race with a total of 134,616 votes, amounting to 58.4 percent of all voters. Incumbent President Yameen had a total of 96,132 votes, which is a percentage of 41.6 from all presidential election voters. This is the first time a presidential candidate was elected with such a sizeable lead.
