The Prosecutor General's Office has taken back the charges levied against 12 opposition lawmakers last year over trespassing at the parliament grounds.

The 12 MPs were charged with obstruction of law enforcement officers after they forced their way past security officers and entered the parliament grounds on July 24, 2017. At the time, they were barred from the parliament as the Elections Commission had declared them unseated from parliament over crossing floors.

Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham on Monday told local media Mihaaru that the PG Office decided to take back the case for further review, due to the Supreme Court's recent verdicts to overturn the EC's disqualification of some of the ousted lawmakers.

"All of their charges were filed in a single form, so we decided to withdraw the case to review it," she said.

Hinnavaru MP and now President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also been charged in the case. However, the charge against Solih had been withdrawn earlier.

Should the charges against the opposition lawmakers in question be proven, they would face a prison term of four months and 24 days. However, the MPs would still retain their seats.
