Parliamentary leader for Progressive Party Maldives, Ahmed Nihan, stated on Monday that President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom filed a case at Supreme Court to annul election as there was evidence to prove the election was rigged.

While speaking at a programme aired by state-owned "Public Service Media (PSM)", MP Nihan said that although it was not easy to take this issue to court, they were forced to do so because of concerns brought to them by the people.

MP Nihan noted that, in a democratic system where the three powers are separated, the Supreme Court is responsible for providing solutions to protect the concerns of citizens.

Pointing out that it was the opposition who had been claiming that EC would not have a free and fair election, Nihad stated that, regardless of whether the cause was negligence or foulpay by the electoral watchdog, there is evidence to prove that the election proceedings were not free of tampering.

The leading member of PPM said that despite which way the apex court's verdict favoured, all citizens should accept the decision and move forward.
