Local media company, Raajje TV, on Wednesday filed a defamation case against Abdul Raheem Abdulla, the parliamentarian of Fonadhoo constituency.

The case, filed at the Civil Court, demands a sum of MVR 1 million to be paid as compensation for defamatory comments Abdul Raheem made regarding Raajje TV and its reporters during a press conference of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Abdul Raheem had claimed that Raajje TV had produced a video threatening Maldives Police Service, which was leaked on social media.

Two reporters of Raajje TV, Mohamed Visaam and Amir Saleem, were arrested shortly after the press conference ended, although the case has now been shelved due to lack of evidence.

Nishan Ibrahim, the legal representative of Raajje TV, stated that the accusations, though baseless, negatively impacted the company. He asserted that Raajje TV was entitled to compensation for damages to their company and their employees.

The local media company itself has faced multiple defamation cases, with the last lawsuit demanding that Raajje TV pay MVR 2 million over broadcasting defamatory content of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
