Saud Hussain, the former parliamentarian for Villingili constituency, called for the resignation of Dr. Shaheem, the Chancellor of the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), claiming that the institution was politicized under his chancellorship.

Saud criticized Shaheem in a tweet for compromising the impartiality of IUM, an institution he noted as being vital to the society, by partaking in political activities whilst holding the title of chancellor and demanded his immediate resignation.

Dr. Shaheem joined the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and contested in the 2018 presidential election as the running mate of incumbent President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Dr. Shaheem decided against relinquishing his title prior to running as vice-president on the request of President Yameen, despite having initially stated intent to do so.

According to Dr. Shaheem, the incumbent president had advised him on the importance of IUM and expressed his wish that Shaheem continue his duties as chancellor even in the event of a possible electoral victory.

Dr. Shaheem further noted that running for office whilst still serving as Chancellor of IUM was not in violation of any existing law.
