A complaint has been filed against the Commissioner of Prisons of the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), Ahmed Shihaan for barring Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from being shifted to house arrest under the order of the MCS medical board.

The former president’s legal team submitted the case against Shihaan to the Maldives Police Service under the Anti-Torture Act.

Mohamed Faisal, a member of the legal team stated that MCS is accountable for any harm that comes to Maumoon during his jail period.

Faisal stated that all doctors have advised against keeping the elderly former president alone in a cell as he is currently being treated for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and requested MCS to grant the request at the earliest convenience.

Members of the former president’s family including his wife, Nasreena Ibrahim went to MCS headquarters, on Wednesday, in an attempt to meet the Commissioner regarding the matter. However, the meeting was as the members of the family had not made an appointment earlier.

Yumna Maumoon, the daughter of former president also stated that the two top officials of MCS did not answer when asked the reason the for the denial of the request by the MSC medical board.
