Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's former employee's Nazma Ibrahim and Mohamed Azmy have been released on Wednesday.

Both Nazma and Azmy were remanded till the end of their respective trials. They were charged with attempting to obstruct justice by trying to destroy evidence pertaining to the alleged coup in February.

While Nazma was under house arrest, Azmy was detained in jail.

The Criminal Court released both Nazma and Azmy without any conditions on Wednesday after their lawyers requested for their detention to be reviewed.

According to Nazma's lawyers, they highlighted that their client has been detained for six months and that due to this, it has been difficult to attend to the needs of her child.

Declaring that there were no further attempts to tamper with evidence, the state affirmed that the relevant authorities had been informed and requested that a decision be made on the detention.

Presiding Judge Adam Arif released both Nazma and Azmy, stating that these were minor offences and that both parties had spent a considerable time in detention.

However, Judge Adam requested their cooperation for the remainder of the trial, instructing Nazma and Azmy to attend all hearings and to inform the court of any plans to travel abroad.

Following the opposition coalition's win during the recent Presidential Elections on Monday, the courts have been releasing several detained political prisoners.
