President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with Acting Commissioner of Police Abdulla Nawaz, on Tuesday.
Faisal Naseem, the opposition running mate and the former Head of Police Intelligence Department also took part in the meeting held at the president-elect’s campaign office.
Although the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has not yet commented on the meeting, Solih’s spokesperson Mariya Didi described the meeting as a courtesy visit.
Nawaz was made the ad interim Police Commissioner following the dismissal of Ahmed Areef and Ahmed Saeed after the landmark verdict issued on February 1 this year by the Supreme Court, which ordered the release of nine high profile political prisoners.
The Acting Police Commissioner has been heavily criticized by the opposition over his handling of MPS following the Supreme Court verdict. In response, Nawaz stated that he would act in accordance to the counsel of the Attorney General.
