The opposition alliance addressed public concerns on Monday evening, assuring to do all that is necessary to sustain the opposition coalition in the future government.

Speaking at the press conference following the opposition's victory in the Presidential Election, Jumhooree Party’s Deputy Leader Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan stated that the current coalition is different from previous coalitions.

The deputy leader said that unlike previous coalitions which were made during the second round of elections, the current coalition of opposition parties banded together before this year's election. He added that the coalition has already identified potential issues that could surface, and that procedures have been developed to tackle such instances.

Dr. Hussain stated that political differences are inevitable and that it will not be difficult to overcome these altercations, adding that he does not believe political differences should lead to dissent in the political arena.

“Differences in opinion is sometimes a reason that has led to constructive developments. We will not obstruct our differences because we will make use of any productive input."

Maldivian Democratic Party’s Vice Chairperson Ali Niyaz stated that the coalition was not formed within a few days merely for an election, but that the coalition has been fighting against President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s “injustice” and "corruption" for well over three years, due to which, Niyaz claims, the coalition can work around the present differences.

The opposition coalition declared that challenges will be faced while working together, but assured the public that they will materialize the picture envisioned for the country.

The preliminary results of the presidential election held Sunday tally at 134,146 votes (58.4 percent) for Solih who represents the opposition coalition, and 95,623 votes (41.6 percent) for incumbent President Yameen. The voter turnout at this year's election was an extraordinary 88.8 percent of the eligible 262,135.
