Police has warned not to cause any unrest during the presidential elections currently ongoing across the island nation.

Speaking to local news media “Public Service Media (PSM)”, superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan stated that a police force is ready to counter any unrest that may occur during the elections period and added that police will be actively working in all inhabited islands until election end.

Police urged people to refrain from causing unrest and civil obedience during the period of the presidential elections.

“According to the information we receive, our force will be ready to take action”, said Shifan.

Shifan further called on to the people to exercise their right to vote and assured that police will provide necessary protections to all voters.

Shifan’s statement came amidst reports on social media that unrest will be caused in certain islands across the archipelago during the ongoing election.

Police had earlier inaugurated a special operation on the security of the presidential elections.

The special operation titled “Operation Blue Wave 2018” was inaugurated at a Police Commanders meeting held at Police base, Iskandhar Koshi.

Speaking during the inauguration, Acting Police Commissioner Abdulla Nawaz stated that the preparation for the upcoming elections will make changes to the standard operations of the Police and encouraged officers to remain determined although difficulties may be faced in carrying out certain operation.

Police will be actively working in all inhabited islands for security measures during the election period.

Elections Commission (EC) has placed a total of 491 ballot boxes across the island nation, while 262,135 individuals have been listed as eligible to vote in the presidential elections.
