President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has mitigated the sentences of those convicted in absentia.
Maldives Correctional Services stated that the president mitigated the sentences of those convicted in absentia before August 13, 2013, under Article 29 of the Clemency Act.
However, Correctional Services did not disclose the names of the individuals to get their sentences mitigated.
Correctional Services further urged those convicted in absentia before the stated date, to contact the authority and further inquire for more details.
Sentence mitigation was introduced to the Maldives in 2008 with the New Constitution. In order to mitigate an individual’s sentence, the said individual must have a clear criminal record for a period of five years.
