The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that 264,756 ballot papers have been printed for the upcoming presidential election.

Ahmed Akram, an EC member has stated that the 2621 extra ballot papers printed do not exceed 1 percent of the voting population, the amount the law permits to be printed in excess.

Despite Novelty Printers, the company generally tasked with printing ballots, offering a price that was MVR million lower, the contract to print ballot papers was given to M7 Printers and Publishers.

Novelty Printers set the price at MVR 63.80 per 25 ballots while M7 printed them at the rate of 345.85 for the same amount.

The Managing Director of M7 Printers and Publishers, Mohamed Abdul Sattar attributed the difference in price to security features.

This includes the condition set by the law, which states that ballot papers must be printed on punched counterfoil sheets

EC has placed 472 ballot boxes across the country in preparation for the presidential election in which 262,135 individuals are eligible to cast their votes.
