Civil Court has accepted the case filed over the defamation of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

President Yameen's lawyer, and former judge of Maldives high court, Abbas Shareef stated that the case, filed last Sunday, against two members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has been accepted by the Civil Court.

The case filed to the Civil Court did not specify an exact amount of compensation for the defamation. Although, according to Abbas, the exact sum of money will soon be revealed after investigation of the case.

The decision to file defamation charges came after MDP officials, at a press conference, accused President Yameen of being involved in illegal oil trade.

The controversial press conference was hosted by MDP's chairperson Hassan Latheef and Secretary General Anas Abdul Sattar.

Broadcasting Commisson (BroadCom) has also been presented with a defamation case due to RaajjeTV broadcasting the press conference.
