Maldives Broadcasting Commission's Vice President Ismail Sofwan has been accused of keeping the commission's President Mohamed Shaheeb hostage in his office.

According to local media Mihaaru, in addition to filing a complaint at the police, Shaheeb has also requested them to provide security.

Meanwhile, Sofwan has denied the accusations against him.

Answering some questions posed by Mihaaru, Shaheeb detailed some of the threats he allegedly received from Sofwan. He stated that he received a phone call from Sofwan asking to meet him at his office, during an official commission meeting.

Shaheeb said that Sofwan had insisted on meeting privately, and that when he met Sofwan, he was threatened to do certain things. According to Shaheeb, when he attempted to walk out of the room, Sofwan had shut the door and locked it.

Shaheeb reported that Sofwan had made three demands: to take an eight-day vacation, and if he could not do so, to resign or to issue a memo handing over the responsibilities of the Broadcasting Commission's President to the vice president for eight days.

Shaheeb said that he had repeatedly asserted he would not comply with the demands. He added that a long-haired man had been by the door outside of his office, and he believed that it was an attempt to intimidate him.

Moreover, Shaheeb claimed that when he attempted to call the police, Sofwan threatened to break his phone by throwing it into the toilet.

Shaheeb was held hostage for about 30 minutes in his office, according to him.

"Sofwan's act is an attempt to obstruct my responsibilities and threaten me", said Sofwan.

It has been reported that Broadcom's struggles began after the appointment of investors from ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.
