Maldives High Commissioner on Tuesday denied any knowledge of a Maldivian cargo vessel being hijacked in Malaysia.

A lawmaker during the parliamentary sitting on Tuesday had alleged that the Maldives High Commission in Malaysia had failed to extend any assistance when the cargo vessel was hijacked in Malaysia last month.

However, Maldivian High Commissioner to Malaysia Mohamed Fahmy Hassan denied any knowledge of the incident.

"We had received no information about any hijacking," Fahmy told Mihaaru refusing to comment any further.

Thullhadhoo MP Nazim Rasheed said the cargo vessel was hijacked last month and the hijackers had threatened to kill the crew.

The information was immediately conveyed to the Maldives High Commission in Malaysia which had failed to act," Nazim said.

Nazim did not name the vessel but had called for Fahmy's immediate resignation for incompetence.

"As soon as the vessel was hijacked the high commission and the Malaysian marine police were informed. Police had acted immediately to rescue the vessel and the crew. But the high commission did not even respond," he added.
