Sheikh Ilyas Hussain's lawyer has assured that the religious scholar, who is currently abroad, will return to give a statement to the Maldives Police Service regarding certain comments he had made on the brutal murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

While speaking at a ceremony held at Addu City, the president of Adhaalath Party’s Scholar Council had claimed that nine youngsters related to the murder were seen confessing to their crime on social media.

Furthermore, he stated that the police were not carrying out investigations into the death of Dr Afrasheem, further questioning the lack of answers given by the police pertaining to his murder.

The police had subsequently summoned Sheikh Ilyas on September 5, claiming that some of the statements he had made included information that the police did not have regarding Dr Afrasheem's case. Sheikh Ilyas had departed to Malaysia on the same day.

Sheikh Ilyas' lawyer and Deputy Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem contested that Sheikh Ilyas did not flee the country and revealing that the trip to Malaysia had been scheduled prior to the summons. He added that Ilyas had been unaware of the police summons at the time of his departure.

Shameem assured that Sheikh Ilyas will return as soon as possible and give his statement to the police.

"From the police's summons chit, we understand that Sheikh Ilyas is being accused of Dr. Afrasheem's murder. What kind of fabrication is this?," said Shameem.

Shameem labelled these actions by the police as violations of the Criminal Procedure Codee and an attempt to politicize the procedure.
