The United States of America refuted claims made by local media based on the alleged leak of documents suggesting that agreements have been made to reduce the military strength of Maldives as per US bidding, should the opposition coalition win the September 23rd presidential election.

According to a statement released by the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, America is aware of the circulation of false news concerning the upcoming presidential elections, further stating that the embassy has no connection to the alleged secret agreement supposedly sent from the embassy to the US Secretary of State.

On Wednesday, Public Service Media (PSM) and social media platforms aligned with the incumbent government, began circulating documents supposedly sent from the embassy to the US Secretary of State alleging that should the opposition coalition overtake the current government in the upcoming presidential elections, that the newly elected opposition government has agreed to reduce the nation’s military strength.

In addition, supporters of Progressive Party of Maldives have also taken to twitter expressing sentiments denying the truth of the response made public by the official US Embassy account.
