Member of Parliament for Fuvahmulah central constituency Ali Fazad, on Wednesday, has stated that he had defected from the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) as the ruling party was overstepping several legal bounds in its’ administration.

MP Fazad was first seen in campaign activities of the opposition at the opposition coalition campaign gathering held in Haa Alif atoll Hoarafushi late Wednesday. The central Fuvahmulah MP is currently travelling alongside opposition coalition presidential candidate, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on his campaign trip to islands of Haa Alif Atoll ahead of the presidential elections slated for September 23.

Fazad further revealed that although he had not officially joined the opposition coalition before, he had been involved in campaign activities of the opposition for a few days.

Noting on why Fazad left ruling PPM, he also stressed that several anti-government employees are being sacked from their posts for their political leanings and called on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to refrain from collecting votes by posing threats to the citizens.

The MP had called on the people to rise above fear and cast their votes for opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for a better change.

Whilst PPM’s disciplinary committee received a request to expel member of the PPM Parliamentary Group MP Fazad, the PPM Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, earlier on Wednesday, had announced that they were looking into MP Fazad’s involvement in the joint opposition coalition campaign activities.

With Fazad’s defection to the opposition, the opposition now holds the majority of Fuvamulah constituency in the parliament with 2 out 3 seats in the central and northern constituency. Fuvahmulah’s southern constituent and speaker of parliament, Abdullah Maseeh, however, is a pro government lawmaker.
