Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) parliamentary member of Fuvahmulah central constituency Ali Fazad, on Wednesday, joined opposition campaign activities.

Fazad confirmed to local news media ‘Mihaaru’ that the MP will be visiting the islands of Haa Alif Atoll alongside opposition presidential candidate Mohamed Ibrahim Solih on campaign trips ahead of the presidential elections slated for September 23.

Fazad received a warm welcome by opposition supporters at the Fuvamulah airport during his visit to the island last Saturday. There have since been rumors of the MP aligning with the opposition, but Fazad had not made an official statement at the time.

With Fazad’s defection to the opposition, the opposition now holds majority of the Fuvamulah constituency in the parliament with 2 out 3 seats in the central and northern constituency. Fuvahmulah’s southern constituent and speaker of parliament, Abdullah Maseeh, however, is a pro government lawmaker.

Fazad was last seen in a ruling party event last May, when he joined a ceremony held by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim in Fuvahmulah. Fazad had also praised the first lady during his speech at the ceremony.
