A five-day notice was issued to vacate the residences near Kulhudhuffushi Regional Airport, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, on Sunday.

The government is to provide land and funding for the construction of 18 houses in the area that is dedicated to the runway of the airport in development.

Local media Mihaaru reported that some of the citizens are not happy about the amount that is to be given as compensation.

Ali Ismail, who lives in a four-room house in the area, said, "We can't just change like that. We have not been given any rent or compensation yet. Some people have started evacuating their houses. If we empty the house it will be when the court orders it, when the police come."

According to Ali, he was promised MVR 851,000 as compensation and an amount not greater than MVR 10,000 as rent for eight months.

However, Reginal Airports Company's Director General Saamee Ageel told Mihaaru that all the court processes related to the evacuation of the houses were completed last week. He added that the compensation amounts will be sent to Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court by Ministry of Finance and Treasury on Monday.

"The evacuation process is happening very peacefully," said Saamee.

Developing Kulhudhuffushi Airport is one of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's presidential pledges from the 2013 elections.

During his campaign tour, he visited Kulhudhuffushi in August where he assured that the airport will be completed before the upcoming Presidential Election slated for September 23.
