Lawyers of Kinbidhoo MP Abdulla Riyaz has called on to the government to release the MP immediately.

Former Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz was sentenced to jail for four months and 24 days in April 2018 by the High Court. He was sentenced over refusing to comply with an order to hand in his mobile phone to the police for investigation.

However, Riyaz has been in custody since March 2018, a month prior to his sentence.

According to a statement released by the MP's lawyers, Procecutor General's (PG) office, via a letter informed the lawyers that no criminal charges can be raised against Riyaz.

The lawyers had called for the release of MP Riyaz, stating that the lawmaker spent almost six months in jail. Additionally, the lawyers expressed concerns as they had not been given any response over the appeal of Riyaz's sentence in Supreme Court.

Prior to the High Court's sentencing, the Criminal Court had extended his remand until the end of the trial on a different case.
