Govt introduces new procedure for Maldivians in Lanka to change permanent address

Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure revealed the pending introduction of new procedures for Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka, who wish to make changes to their permanent address.

According to Deputy Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, Ibrahim Nazeem, the ministry has introduced an easier procedure for people wishing to make changes to their permanent address, to submit their application forms without having to leave Sri Lanka. The ministry revealed that a number of people favoured the necessity for the procedures.

"People in Sri Lanka should not have to travel to Maldives just to change their permanent address. Furthermore, we want to extend this opportunity to as many people seeking to pursue this change", said Ibrahim Nazeem.

Nazeem continued his statement, pointing out over 1,800 applicants have sent in their forms in order to make changes to their permanent addresses.

There are two set categories for Male' natives requiring housing, to apply for living quarters. These categories include two room flats, as well as one-room flats under the government-spearheaded 'Hiyaa Flats' project.

Additionally, Nazeem noted the new applicants will be given a document and an official slip, which should be attached to the application form for the flats.

Currently, there are 3,264 individuals pending to acquire housing within the capital. This program has been going on for 31 years. A grand total of 12,000 non-Male natives are currently on the list.
