Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday held a briefing session with all the heads of resident diplomatic missions in the Maldives about the upcoming Presidential Election.

Amidst calls by several foreign bodies for Maldives to ensure a free and fair election, Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the resident ambassadors of seven nations, including Akhilesh Mishra from India and Zhang Lizhong from China. The minister was joined by Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer and other top officials of the ministry.

According to the ministry, Dr. Asim provided general information about the election, registration process and campaign. He also answered queries from the ambassadors, regarding the voting process.

While the foreign ministry held the briefing with resident diplomatic missions, the government has been accused by the opposition of influencing independent institutions and thus compromising the fairness of the election. However the state has refuted all such allegations.
