Despite European Parliament member Tomas Zdechovsky confirming the existence of an EU sanction list consisting of 41 names, Maldivian ambassador to the European Union (EU) Ahmed Shiyan rebut the statement claiming that no such sanctions have been made by the EU against the Maldives.

Speaking to global news media 'EP Today', Zdechovsky declared the that a sanction list consisting of the names of 41 individuals had been formulated, but had not offered any further details.

In a statement given to local news media 'PSM', Shiyan responded by calling Zdechovsky's statement false comments that were extended with the malicious purpose of influencing voters prior to the September 23rd presidential race.

"Radical things happen every election. This is just one play of a vicious game. There will be even more. Nevertheless, I guarantee you, there is no such sanction list against the Maldives", said Shiyan.

In addition, Shiyan dubbed the reports given by Zdechovsky to 'EP Today' as being debatable, stating that the credibility of his word was being looked into.

Remarking that the spreading of false claims regarding the EU were not likely to be tolerated, Shiyan offered assurances that he would raise the issue amongst all concerned parties within the EU.

He also stated that a list formulated by an individual member of the European Parliament would be invalid, as the formulation of such a sanction list would require a unanimous decision among all of its members.

Shiyan also pointed out that any such lists, even a sanction list targeting specific individuals of a specific country, would be handled by the European Council itself, highlighting that it would also be acknowledged and verified by the EU.

"Had there been a list, every Maldivian would be informed accordingly. This is the age of technology and anybody can verify such claims", said Shiyan.

In July, the EU Council announced the formulation of a framework for restrictive measures to be placed on Maldives, along with threats of targeted sanctions against individuals responsible for the "undermining the rule or obstructing an inclusive political solution" and those who have committed "serious human rights violations.

As per the first framework, steps will be taken against some of the political leaders and their associates. The EU is granted powers to impose travel bans on member countries and freeze assets abroad.
